Regent vs. Seabourn: Which Luxury Cruise Is Right for You?
If you're comparing Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn, you've already narrowed your search to two wonderful luxury cruise lines. Both offer beautiful suites, attentive service, excellent dining and a more intimate experience than a large resort ship. But they approach the days ashore differently, and that difference can have a real impact on your trip and your budget.
I've sailed with both lines, including a recent Alaska voyage on Seabourn Encore. When helping someone choose, I start with a simple question: What do you want your cruise days to feel like?
The biggest difference: What happens in port
Regent includes a wide selection of shore excursions in its cruise fare. That makes it especially appealing if you love organized sightseeing and plan to take a tour in most ports. You can choose from eligible included excursions, though popular options can fill up, so it pays to reserve early. Regent also sells Regent Choice excursions and other special experiences for an additional charge.
On a Seabourn ocean cruise, shore excursions are generally an extra purchase. That can work beautifully if you prefer to explore independently, arrange private guides, or simply stay aboard and enjoy a quiet ship while others go ashore. It also means the advertised fare may not tell the whole story if you expect to book a tour in every port. Seabourn's expedition voyages have different inclusions, so I would compare those separately.
What's included on board?
Both lines include dining, a selection of wines and spirits, and gratuities in the onboard experience. Both also offer complimentary Wi-Fi, although package features and connection quality can vary. Regent includes specialty restaurants at no added charge; Seabourn's dining venues are complimentary as well. Some reservations may still be needed, and specific restaurants depend on the ship.
Regent's current inclusions also cover the in-suite minibar and its eligible shore excursions. Its Ultimate All-Inclusive Fare can add flights and transfers; airfare is not automatically part of every Regent fare. That distinction matters when you're comparing quotes.
Seabourn's onboard experience centers on its oceanfront suites, relaxed dining and personalized service. Its signature events are another part of the appeal, although which events take place depends on the itinerary and conditions.
What does each line feel like?
To me, Regent is a strong fit for the traveler who likes a well-planned day and the ease of having many costs settled before departure. You can look forward to seeing the destination without pricing out a separate tour at every stop.
Seabourn is a strong fit for the traveler who wants an elegant ship experience and more freedom to decide how to spend time ashore. On my Seabourn Encore Alaska sailing, the setting itself was a major part of the pleasure: time on deck, the scenery and the chance to enjoy the ship between ports.
Of course, the ship, suite and itinerary can shape your experience as much as the cruise line's name. I would never choose between these two on inclusions alone.
Which is the better value?
The answer depends on how you'll actually travel. I compare the total trip cost: the cruise fare, airfare, transfers, excursions you'll really take, and any private experiences you want. If you plan to book organized tours in many ports, Regent's included choices may add meaningful value. If you'd rather wander on your own or book just one or two special outings, Seabourn may be the better fit even when its excursions cost extra.
I also look closely at the ports and time in each one. A great itinerary on the right dates can matter more than a small difference in price.
My quick take
Choose Regent if you want a broad choice of included excursions and like knowing much of your trip is covered in advance.
Choose Seabourn if you're drawn to its intimate onboard atmosphere and want flexibility to plan your own days in port.
Both can deliver a memorable luxury cruise. The best choice is the one that matches the way you like to travel, the places you most want to see and what you want included in the price.
